Best Paragliding in Kuta Lombok

aragliding in Kuta Lombok

If you are visiting Lombok, you probably came for the surf or the beaches. But honestly, paragliding in Kuta Lombok is the hidden gem of adrenaline activities here. It’s one of those things that looks terrifying from the ground but feels surprisingly peaceful once you are actually in the air.

Unlike Bali, where the airspace is crowded and the views are often of hotels, the skies here are wide open. You are flying over jagged green cliffs, white sandy bays, and sometimes even wild buffalo grazing on the ridges. It is a completely different perspective of the island.

Let’s break down how you can get up there, who to fly with, and why it might just be the highlight of your trip.

Top Paragliding Operators in Kuta Lombok

There are a few teams operating around Kuta Lombok, each with their own takeoff spots and vibe. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Sky Lombok Paragliding

One of the more well-known operators in the area. They’re usually based around Merese Hill or Prabu Hill, depending on wind direction.

They offer tandem flights, which means you don’t need any experience, you’re strapped in with a certified pilot who handles everything while you soak in the view.

Their flights last around 10-15 minutes, sometimes longer if the conditions are right. Prices hover around IDR 650,000-850,000 for a tandem flight (roughly $40-55), which includes gear and basic insurance.

2. Lombok Paragliding (Kuta)

This crew is pretty flexible. They’ll often choose takeoff spots depending on daily weather patterns, which is a good sign, they’re not just sticking to one location regardless of safety. They’ve been known to use Bukit Mandalika for flights when the southern winds hit just right.

Tandem packages are usually in the same price range and they’re also open to organizing group flights, which is fun if you’re traveling with friends. They’re pretty active on WhatsApp too, which makes last-minute bookings easier.

3. Prabu Skies

This is a slightly smaller, locally run setup, often flying out from the Prabu hills area. These hills are a little more inland, so the scenery is more about rolling hills, farms, and patchwork rice fields than dramatic cliffs. But that actually gives a different perspective on the area, and it’s usually less crowded.

Don’t expect a slick website or online booking system, but they’re known for being down-to-earth and helpful, especially if you’re new to the whole thing.

Best Time of Day to Fly

Lighting and wind are the two factors that define your flight. Most operators fly in the afternoon, from around 1:00 PM until sunset. This is when the sea breeze is strongest and most consistent.

The “Sunset Flight” is the premium slot. Taking off around 5:00 PM means you are in the air as the sky turns orange and pink. Seeing the sun dip below the horizon from 300 meters up is magical. The water turns a deep gold color, and the shadows on the hills get long and dramatic.

However, the midday flights have their perks too. The water is brighter blue because the sun is overhead, making the coral reefs below pop. It depends on whether you want vibrant colors for photos or a romantic atmosphere.

Costs and Inclusions

Paragliding isn’t the cheapest activity in Lombok, but it is competitive compared to Europe or Australia. Generally, you are looking at paying between 900,000 IDR to 1,300,000 IDR (roughly $60-$85 USD) for a flight.

This usually includes the hotel transfer, the flight itself (which lasts about 15 to 20 minutes depending on wind), and often the GoPro footage. Always clarify if the video is included before you book. Some places charge an extra 150,000 IDR for the SD card at the end.

Is 15 minutes enough? Yes. It might sound short, but when you are up there with the wind rushing past you and adrenaline pumping, it feels much longer. Plus, if the wind is really good, pilots will often keep you up a bit longer just for the fun of it.

What to Wear and Bring

You don’t need a flight suit, but you should dress sensibly. It can be chilly up in the air due to the wind chill, even if it is hot on the beach.

  • Shoes: Wear closed shoes like sneakers. You have to run for takeoff and landing. Doing this in flip-flops is a recipe for losing a shoe or stubbing a toe.
  • Sunglasses: essential. The wind makes your eyes water, and the sun reflection off the ocean is strong.
  • Sunscreen: You are closer to the sun and getting hit by UV rays from all angles.
  • Pants vs Shorts: Shorts are fine, but long pants protect your legs from scratchy grass during takeoff.

Leave your heavy backpack in the car. You want to be light. Most harnesses have a small pocket for your phone, but make sure it has a lanyard or is zipped away securely.

Seasonality and Weather

The prime season for paragliding kuta lombok aligns with the dry season, roughly from May to October. This is when the trade winds blow steadily from the southeast, hitting the Prabu ridge perfectly.

During the wet season (November to April), flying is more hit-and-miss. The wind often switches to the west, which isn’t ideal for the main launch site. Plus, rain is a no-go. You cannot fly with a wet wing; it becomes heavy and dangerous.

However, there are calm days in the wet season where flying is possible. It’s best to contact the operators on WhatsApp the day before to check the forecast.

They are usually very honest about whether it is flyable or not. They don’t want to waste their time driving up a hill for nothing either.
